Working at the Whaling Wall

As the restoration of the Song of the Whales mural, located on the Cleveland Public Power Building, is underway, members of both the WOOD-LEE and Berea Moving family volunteer at the site. The artist, known simply as “Wyland,” is hoisted high in the air on a painting lift to carefully outline his sun-faded whales, originally painted in 1997, with a fresh coat of blue. Members of our team assist the project by moving the large five-gallon buckets of paint to and from the paint spraying machines. Though the “whale wall” is a recognizable Cleveland landmark, it is most often viewed by passersby on the highway. Volunteering at the site offers a truly unique experience and viewing of the mural. Wyland also takes some time away from adding finer details to the whales, to speak with some local school children about the arts and water conservation. Wyland states that, “no matter where we live, we have an impact on the ocean” and having the large whales on a building next to our great lake will help remind us of our constant connection to the ocean.
